This spring, people will be able to buy tomatoes grown in Slovakia in hypermarkets. A new greenhouse was constructed in the municipality Horná Potôň near Dunajská Streda on an area of 6 hectares which will produce 3.25 million kg of tomatoes each year. Geothermal energy will be used for greenhouse heating. Slovenská sporiteľňa is the only bank in Slovakia providing financial support for this project.
New jobs for tens of people
The company Prima Fruit started planting the tomatoes in recent days and the first ones will be in stores in April already. The greenhouse will produce fresh tomatoes continuously for 10 months each year and at least 50 people will be employed, with additional seasonal employees planned for the summer months. This means that the project will help reduce the unemployment rate in Trnava region.
The effective business model won the support of the bank
Using geothermal energy for heating significantly improves the efficiency of tomato production in greenhouses, improving the company’s competitiveness on the market. That’s also one of the reasons why Slovenská sporiteľňa decided to support this project with EUR 5.7 million and cover 70% of total costs. “Founders of the company Prima Fruit already had years of experience with growing tomatoes and construction of greenhouses. We knew their business model well and we were also convinced that the client will be ale to sell the production in Slovak retail chains,” explains Stanislav Plevák, Head of Regional Commercial Centre in Trnava and adds: “We are pleased to be the financial partner of this large project and be able to help not just the company with the realization of their business plans but also the region by creating new jobs.“
Renewable sources of energy and without pesticides
The project of the company Prima Fruit will please Slovak consumers who ask for vegetables grown here in our country. The new greenhouse is the biggest of its kind in Slovakia. The tomatoes are not sprayed with pesticides, the so called “biological protection” is used against various pests and this helps to protect the environment. One plant can reach 6-12 meters and provides no less than 25 kg of tomatoes per year. In total, there will be 130 thousand plants, producing 3.25 million kg of tomatoes in one year.
